This is one holiday tradition I love and is so much fun. It’s the family Christmas Light Scavenger Hunt!
This tradition began four years ago. I had found out about Christmas Lights Scavenger hunts through Pinterest (LOVE Pinterest!) so Jeff and I gave it a try. To say we had fun was putting it mildly. It was a blast as we went from one neighborhood to another, seeking out Christmas displays from the most popular to the least expected.
The next year, we tried to encourage other family members to go but no one was really interested, but we went again, having more fun than the first time.I took lots of pictures so when Christmas 2017 rolled around, my parents along with my daughter and her husband decided to go. We all had the same list to go by and we gave ourselves a time limit of one hour. You should have seen us going through the neighborhoods! And then we met back at McDonalds to compare notes to see who had found the most items. We all enjoyed it so much that we promised to make it a yearly thing.
So last night was this year’s scavenger hunt. We also had two new players: my aunt Rita and my 95-year-old grandmother. Once again, we had so much fun! This year we allowed ourselves two hours and used a different list. The new list I found gave us points for different items we found. At the end of the evening, it was a tie for who won the hunt but that didn’t even matter.
What was important was sharing a fun, laughter filled holiday tradition with family. It was so exciting to find different lights and displays. The big point prize this year was find the “lamp”. You know – the lamp from the movie “A Christmas Story”? Well, everyone found it except Jeff and I! But we found items others didn’t. After we were finished, we sat at McDonald’s, comparing notes and the funny things we saw. We showed pictures we had taken of beautiful displays and our selfies (one of the items on the list to get 5 points!).
I hope over the next week and then as we go into the New Year that you can take time to spend with family and friends. It would also be nice if we could keep this feeling alive all year round and not only once a year.
