“Thankful November” Day 5: Watching Wildlife From My Front Porch

It’s already Day 5 of “Thankful November” and today I’m grateful for all the wildlife I get to watch right from my front porch!

Though I live in the city, I’m blessed that my home is near the river and the area is filled with all types of wildlife. I love watching the animals and reptiles all year long. This past summer we “welcomed” a new alligator to the pond nearby.  He/she joins the current resident gator “Snap”. We’ve yet to name the newest member to the pond but once we do I’ll be sure to let you know. This pond is also the home of loads of turtles that like to lay their eggs under our Oak trees. Plus with the amount of frogs in the water, Jeff and I can sit on the front porch and hear a serenade every evening during the summer.

Pond, Alligator, Retiles, Animals, Outdoors, WildlifeRight now we are seeing a lot of deer in the yard. Yes, the occasional doe will run by our house during the day but since my husband has to get up at 3:45am for work, he is always checking outside to see if we have “company”. Lately the deer have been feeding and even laying down to rest in the front yard. We also have a three-legged deer that we have watched grow this entire summer. We are so excited that she (at least I think it’s a girl) survived. We found it amazing how protected that little deer was by the rest of the deer she was with – they truly take care of their own.

We also have about four Hawk’s nests in the trees surrounding our house. They have been quite vocal lately, not sure exactly why, but they are so stunning to watch when they are soaring through the sky. Then there is our resident owl that likes to perch on our back fence and let us know that he is around. Last week, though, when Emma went outside just after dark, she scared him and he went flying away very fast. Hopefully he’ll be back.

We also see our share of raccoon, opossums, foxes, bobcats, and so many birds they are hard to list. Coyote are in the area too but we have yet to see one. This year we’ve also had our share of enormous spiders, more than normal and we even named a few: Charlotte and Lucas! Let’s just say walking around at night requires a good flashlight! Then we’ve had some snakes, even ones that like to come up through the slates of our porch!

All of this being said, I find it amazing that I get to watch so much wildlife from the front porch of my house! What a blessing!

What are you thankful for on Day 5 of “Thankful November”?

Big Hugs!
