Sometimes You Just Need Some Peace And Quiet

Finding That Quiet Time

Well, Hurricane/Tropical Storm Florence is almost a memory for those of us here in the Lowcountry. We were so lucky and spared the worst of the storm. My prayers and thoughts are for my neighbors north of us in Myrtle Beach and definitely North Carolina where they saw the brute strength of this hurricane. Hopefully soon all will be back to normal, even if it’s a new normal depending on the damages and changes made by the storm.

Today for us, it was rain and wind but wasn’t much different than we have experienced in a good thunderstorm. Yes, there are limbs and debris in the yard but that’s okay. So far (keeping our fingers crossed) we haven’t lost power and that is a huge blessing. During Hurricane Hugo we were without power for over 3 weeks and I can tell you that was no fun.

Now one thing we did experience was odd plus it was bad timing. In the middle of some heavy wind and rain last night I heard what I thought was a branch hitting the roof of our house.  It didn’t sound horrible and was much too dark to investigate, so I went back to writing on the computer. About 1am, I woke to a warm house. Not hot but I could tell the a/c was not working. So in the wee hours of the morning my husband and I were trying to figure out what was wrong with the unit.

We found out this afternoon that our compressor went out last night (probably the sound I heard!). How wonderful! I have reminded myself that we do have electricity and that is such a blessing but our a/c out – not working? An a/c that needs work during a time when most businesses are closed? Lucky for us, our a/c guy did come out, checked the unit but we can’t get anything fixed till probably Tuesday! So we have all the windows open with ceiling fans whirling above in every room.  Hope we can keep some cloudy skies too to keep the temperatures down!

But I have to say it’s been nice today. Listening to the rain outside, the breeze blowing through the house keeping it cool, the quietness all around. It has been so relaxing! And I can tell you it’s been perfect for a day of writing! The creative juices have been turned on.

I didn’t realize I was so used to always having something on like music or TV. I mean, I don’t always have a device on but maybe about 50% of the time. It almost feels a little like – dare I say – camping in my own house. Yes I have electricity but we have kept everything off for most of the day and it’s been nice.

When is the last time you have had a day where there was just the natural sounds around you? Or maybe silence? For me, I can say it has been quite a while until today. And now that I’ve enjoyed this little taste, I might have to incorporate “quite” days into my life.

Big Hugs to all!

Miki
