When I’m at a book-signing event or someone finds out I’m an author, one question I’m asked is what type of books do I write. I respond by asking: “Do you like happy endings?”
The reason I ask that question is that all my books, so far, always have a positive message or happy ending (and I hope to keep it that way!). What surprises me is that some people don’t like this. I’ve been told so many times: “That’s not real life.” And this is what I counter with: Real life can be tough enough at times so why not let yourself get lost in a book that takes you away to another place where you can leave everyday life behind for a while? Maybe soak in some happiness?
My novels aren’t all roses. There are all kinds of life issues that are dealt with: love, loss, excitement, life-changing decisions, parental abandonment, trauma, the giddiness of new love, alcoholism, family issues and so much more. But I hope that I’m able to show how my characters, mostly women, overcome these obstacles in positive ways. And I always have a happy ending!
So one way I share happiness is through my novels. Another is through positive posts on social media. Lately people are so divided that seeing something happy on your social media feed can make you feel good. I love sharing fun things!
Also, when I’m out and about, running errands, I always make it a point to smile and say “Hi” to people I don’t know. You never know how you will affect someone’s day or you might be able to start a conversation with someone and find a new friend.
Real life has its ups and downs – so do my novels. But I like to put a happy spin on them and my real life to as much as possible. Sometimes it can be a challenge but I’d rather concentrate on the “Happy” than the negative.
Remember to take some time for self-care this weekend and share some smiles with those around you! I bet you’ll get some happy smiles right back!
