It’s All About Staying Organized
This past weekend during my book signing, a question I encounter at these events came to me once again: How do I stay organized while I’m writing?
I usually have to clarify if they want to know how I keep my stories organized or are they asking how I’m able to keep organized overall so I’m able to have the time to write. It is the later question that is asked of me more frequently.
First of all, I have routines in place that I follow daily, weekly and monthly. They are in writing in my planner and I also keep a list in my Evernote App that is available on my iPad and iPhone. If I didn’t have these routines, I would probably be completely unproductive! LOL! Well maybe not totally but having this structure helps me tremendously so that I have the time to write.
I break up my day by writing in the morning and any type of paper work/errands/cleaning, etc., is done in the afternoon. I know that physically and mentally I’m at my best when I first wake up so that is why I try to write in the A.M. I guess since I’m rested, my creativity is much better.
In the afternoon is when I do the things that are what I call “daily chores”. But having my day set up this way also allows me to be able to rest if I’m having that “off” day. If there is a time when resting is what my body is telling me I have to do, I take the tasks that I should have done for that particular afternoon and spread them out over the next couple of days.
I know that not everyone has this ability to have a working schedule like this. But even if you are in a corporate setting, I always suggest that you do the things that can be more challenging or the items that demand more of your creativity in the mornings, even if you call yourself a “night owl”. Research has shown that most people are able to perform tasks better after getting rest, especially a good night’s sleep.
I hope this helps a bit for those who were interested about staying organized to be able to do some of the things you want to do. I have to admit that it took me a while to set up this system but now that it is in place, I have more time to write or work on my creative activities like painting, crocheting and much more. It even leaves me more time to spend with family and friends plus still be able to write about the stories I dream about.
Is there anything you could put in place that would allow you more time and freedom to do the things that make you happy? If so, try a few of these ideas and if you have any more questions, please let me know. Happy to share my thoughts and ideas.
