As most of you already know, I have this little condition called Mastocytosis – a rare illness that can make things pretty complicated for me. But I have to take responsibility and own up to the fact that I haven’t been doing everything I should to take care of myself. Ouch!
This illness can really throw me out of commission if I don’t stay vigilant about so many areas of my life – from the shampoo I use, to the food I eat, to the stores I go to and so much more. I have to be careful and I usually am. But last year, after feeling somewhat good/normal for a while and receiving good blood results, I got lazy and let my guard down as far as my self-care. You would think that I would understand that I was doing better because I was taking care of myself, right? Oh well!
So, as you can imagine, it has all caught up with me. When you get back test results that make you cringe inside and put that together with not feeling your best for a while now (yes, I ignored those symptoms as much as I could, silly me!), I’ve now taken this as a sign to “Get Your Act Together Girl”!
I’ve decided it’s time to quit whining and put my big girl panties on! It’s time for getting back on track. Now, I haven’t strayed terribly – it could be worse – but I know deep down that it’s time to make myself the priority I’ve been talking about for these last few months. It’s just hard for this “Type A” gal.
I’m sharing all this with you because I want to encourage YOU TO PUT YOURSELF FIRST ON YOUR LIST. That’s right – be a bit selfish – it’s not a bad thing. In the big scheme of life if you are in good health – mentally and physically – you are in a much better position to help yourself and those around you.
Right now, I’m not feeling my best and in turn I’m not able to help my parents like I want to. They have both been so sick and I’ve only been able to do a few things for them here and there. No, I want to be in better health so I can be there for others and myself!
Is there something you need to do to take care of yourself right now? Something that would benefit not only you but those around you? If so, go do it! I am and you should too! Getting back on track is the only way.
