Do You Like To Vacation By Yourself?

Today I wanted to talk about something out of my first novel, “The Keys to Love”. In the book, the main character, Maddy, goes to the Florida Keys by herself, to get clarity about her future. Basically, a vacation by herself. Have you ever or do you go on vacations alone?Beach, Folly Beach, Charleston, South Carolina, Beaches, Sand, Surf, Ocean, Sunrise, Sunset

I, personally, haven’t taken a vacation by myself. I love being with family and friends, sharing the fun and excitement of a new place or adventure. But I have been talking about going somewhere alone for a different reason.

In my book, “The Keys to Love”, Maddy is in a strange place in her life. Dealing with a rare illness; her only child who has medical issues of her own is now married; Maddy’s marriage of twenty-five years has suddenly dissolved. She is at a crossroads of trying to find what she wants in life, who she is and how does she take the next step. With her best friend living in the Florida Keys, she takes a month-long trip to the tropical islands, hoping some time away from her present surroundings will give her clarity about her future. And though she could stay with her friend Riley, she decides to rent a house, needing to be by herself.

I remember when I wrote this, the thought of escaping to the Florida Keys sounded incredible. In fact, it still does! I’ve actually talked to my husband about going there, by myself, but for a totally different reason: to write.

I have written every one of my novels so far right here at home. I actually love sitting propped up in bed with my laptop and typing my latest book. When I’m all nice and comfortable, I can write for hours though I try to take a break every 45 to 50 minutes. But I think going away to write might be something to try and here is the reason.

Since I love to do so many things when I take those writing breaks I get easily distracted. I suddenly see some laundry that needs to be done or a project I started and I want to finish. The worst is taking a lunch break and deciding to watch just a bit of TV and getting caught up in a show or worst a movie! Ugh! But once I get back to the laptop, I’m usually quickly immersed in the world of my novel and I’m fine.

I’m just wondering if I’m at some other place than home if I would be more focused making writing a bit easier. It is something I might try later this year. I could even follow Maddy’s footsteps and take a train to Miami then rent a car to take me to the Florida Keys! Sounding good to me already!

If you have taken vacations by yourself, I would love to find out your opinion: was it wonderful or do you wish you had someone with you to share the adventure?

Big Hugs!

Miki

PS: Tomorrow night is the big LIVE Q&A on Facebook and Instagram! I can’t wait! Will be starting at 7pm EST – see you there!

I took a solo vacation to New Bern, NC. I stayed with my aunt and uncle, but they worked all day. Each day was an adventure in a different Eastern Carolina town, on my own schedule. It was very satisfying and relaxing and the adventure of it was a thrill too.
