So, I have a secret: I tend to procrastinate. I do this in all areas of my life. It seems I can always find something to do other than what I should be doing but lately I find I’m getting better at not putting things off.
Sometimes I do this is because the task at hand seems daunting. Even when I break up the project into the smallest “to do” list, it still seems so large. This drives me a little batty because I don’t like this habit of mine so I’m really working on it. Here are some ideas I’m trying to help me eliminate this potential problem and they do seem to be working.
#1 Get Organized
This one can be hard at first but once you are organized in the different areas of your life it is easier to stay on task. Use a planner, declutter your home, know where your supplies are – these are just a few suggestions to help you get organized.
#2 Set Achievable Goals
I have a tendency to set some very lofty goals. Lately I’ve finally started setting more reasonable goals and when I’m able to check one off my list, the feeling of accomplishment is amazing. Plus, it makes me not want to put things off anymore!
#3 Create A Schedule
A schedule or routine is one of the best things to have in your life to help you not procrastinate. It helps you get things done each day by knowing the basic things you have to do each day.
#4 Use Incentives
It’s always great to get a reward for a job well done and this works well for ending the procrastination habit. Make a list of items or things that you could treat yourself to that would make you feel great for getting the task done.
#5 Get Rid of Distractions
When you are working on something and you have a timeline, get rid of all the distractions (TV, books, phones, etc.) around you to help you stay on tasks. Sometimes this might even mean going someplace else to get your work done. I use this one by going to the beach to write instead of staying home and seeing all the projects I’m working on.
#6 Take Breaks
Make sure to take breaks. I know that sometimes I get so involved in my project I keep going and going till I’m so tired. Then I’ll quit and tell myself I’ll do it later then end up putting it off. Rewarding myself with a rest breaks helps me stay on task and get things done.
#7 Do the Hard Stuff First
When you look at your to do list for the day, make sure to do the most difficult tasks first to get them out of the way. They are usually the ones we dread the most so being able to mark them off your list is a definite incentive to keep going and get the things done for the day.
Just know that you aren’t alone if you have a tendency to put things off. I think we all do this to some degree. Using the above steps has helped me so much and I hope they help you too!
