I’m really excited today to share my “Book of the Week” – The Glass Ocean by Karen White, Beatriz Williams and Lauren Willig. This is another book I LOVED!
I was lucky enough to meet the 3 wonderful authors who created this novel at an event during their promotional tour for “The Glass Ocean”. Being able to hear the details behind the writing of the book, what it took for the authors to write this book together and their research into the story was very interesting. But what intrigued me the most was the historical backdrop of the book: the sinking of the Lusitania.
I vaguely remember the history of the sinking of the Lusitania (1915) because much more is written about the Titanic (1912). I know we went over it in History class (a LONG time ago for me!) but had really forgotten about it. After listening to Karen, Lauren and Beatriz talk about the ship, the history, and their research to make this a wonderful fiction read while keeping the pertinent facts about the sinking of the ship intact, I couldn’t wait to read it. Once I had finished the book, I was certainly not disappointed.
I loved the different story lines that encompassed the book, from 1st class passengers to the 3rd class, among the tragedy of the loss of the passengers, crew and the ship. How the authors were able to intertwine these groups of people was masterful.
Another twist to the story is the fact that the authors also bring a present day character into the mix which helps put the whole story together. I aspire one day to write a fiction novel that is set in both the present and the past. This book is a wonderful example of telling a story that expands a great deal of time.
I highly recommend “The Glass Ocean”. It was intriguing, historical, had romance and kept me hooked to the last page.
Big Hugs!
