This week’s “Book To Read” is an exciting one – “Outlander” by Diana Gabaldon.
I was introduced to the “Outlander” series via the TV show on Starz. After watching the first three seasons of the show, I decided to read the novel. I will admit that the 600+ page book seemed daunting but I decided to give it a go.
The way Diana weaves time travel, history and a love story together is magical. But I’ve talked to some people that liked the story and others that didn’t. The novel is set in both the mid 1900’s and late 1700’s (time travel). Things were definitely different for women especially in those time periods. If you read the novel you need to remember that women were treated much differently then than we are now. The reason I mention this is because that is what has turned some people off from reading the book.
I took all of this into consideration before watching the series and reading the novel. But the history involved was so interesting, the love that Claire and Jamie have for each other runs deep, plus the aspect of time travel made for a wonderful twist. For me, it all came together for a good story. I felt like I had traveled back to 18thcentury Scotland with Claire.
Let me know if you have read “Outlander” and your thoughts. If you search the internet, the opinions of this book are all over the place but mostly in the favorable category. Personally, though it was a long book and I had to read a sentence sometimes twice because of the Scottish wording, I thought the story was captivating.
