Another Passion Of Mine: Weather Watching!
So you know how much I love the beach! I would literally live right next to the sand dunes if I could but I have to admit I adore where I live right now too – by the river. Plus I’m only 14 miles from the beach – not a bad drive. But I have another love that started when I was a child: I’m fascinated by our weather!
This passion started when I was very young and my dad took me to our local weather station at the airport. Since my dad had been in the Air Force, he knew so much about the weather, cloud formations, storms and more. We would sit by the airport where the weather station was and watch the planes fly in and out, all the time my dad teaching all about the weather.
I find our weather patterns absolutely intriguing! But I’m not the only one in my household who feels this way – my husband is just as bad as I am. I think we both have multiple apps that are all weather related and I have to admit that I look at them several times a day. I’m always tracking the latest storm, weather front or the unusual weather we sometimes experience, not only here locally but around the world.
Since I live in South Carolina, I have been through my share crazy weather: living through a tornado when I was ten, many hurricanes including Hurricane Hugo in 1989, multiple unusual snowstorms for the south (like the one earlier this year) and much more. Though I think the meteorologists do their best to forecast the weather, it can change so quickly which I think this is the part that fascinates me. Now I don’t want to down play the destruction extreme weather can cause but I love learning the intricacies of our weather. We even have a little weather station in the backyard which we love watching: measuring rainfall, listening to the buzz each time lightning strikes close by, watching temperatures – from the very lows to the very hot days we are experiencing now.
My husband and I keep saying that we are going to take one of those storm-chasing vacations one day. I think that would be incredible – to see such storms on the open plains where you can view a thunderhead from the base to the very top! We sometimes get to see clouds like that here, usually out on the beach when the storms are offshore. And last night I did get this shot of a beautiful thunderhead that eventually came our way with a bit of rain.
Isn’t nature fascinating???
Sending Happy Vibes To All!
